Culture for Sale
With Caribana entering its 50th anniversary, it’s important to look back at the origins of the festival and how it has changed throughout the years. Originally started by the Caribbean Culture Committee to centre their culture and support their community, Caribana has now turned into one of Toronto’s biggest summer festivals and tourist attractions. However, many of the Caribbean folks involved in its founding are being pushed out amidst the increasing involvement of corporate sponsors, the city, and the Festival Management committee that now runs the event.
Join us for a panel discussion as we discuss the festival’s origins, present day corporatization, and where we can go from here. Each of the guest speakers have had extensive experience in organizing Caribana throughout its history: keep your eyes on the page as we announce our speakers.
